Dental Ultrasonic Scaler for Equipment

While new technological advancements are being made each day, even the best dental ultrasonic scaler on the market will still generate a lot of heat when pressed against the enamel. As such, it is important not to use it continuously on a single tooth for more than 10 seconds. 

A lot more care should be taken when cleaning a patient’s teeth when they have a crown implant. Serious damage can occur if the ultrasonic scaler is used carelessly around the margins of the crown, which will leave those areas exposed to bacteria and vulnerable to decay.

If the patient has very sensitive teeth, high-power dental ultrasonic scalers cannot be used because of the level of pain and discomfort they will cause. In such cases, the dental surgeon will have to find other ways to remove the plaque. 

However, the dentist also needs to be ready to judge each case as it comes. If the patient reports feeling pain from temperature changes, it is up to the dentist to decide whether an ultrasonic scaler can be used, and if so, for how long.

While a dental ultrasonic scaler is an impressive tool that can add an extra dimension to the dental services you can provide, it does have its limitations. One of the most obvious is that a lot of skill and care is required to prevent hurting the patient or causing serious damage to the teeth.

Most ultrasonic scalers come with standard beavertail shape tips that cannot be used to clean the subgingival area. The dental hygienist will have to use special tips for this or find a different method to clean with.  Using a scan can also put added pressure on the tooth, which is not good in cases where dental crowns have been replaced.

Many dentists will highly recommend using ultrasonic scalers, but there are some risks that you need to be aware of. Besides the risk of damaging replaced crowns, this method may also interfere with the function of some types of heart pacemakers. 

If pressed too hard against the tooth, the vibrating tip may cause scratches to form on the enamel, which will provide an excellent place for bacteria to grow. In some cases, the deep vibrations of the scaler may cause some types of thrombogenic damage to blood vessels close to the tooth.
